Frequently Asked Questions

About Bio Brite

What is Bio Brite?
Bio Brite is a laundry detergent formulated specifically for natural cotton fabrics. It's enzyme-free, handmade in small batches in the USA, activated by hot water, and available in three scents: Nag Champa, French Lavender, and Island Coconut.

Why was Bio Brite created?
After nearly a decade of working with 100% natural cotton fabrics, we identified a consistent pattern of fiber degradation tied to enzyme-based detergents—including products marketed as gentle or free & clear. We couldn't find a detergent that cleaned effectively without gradually compromising natural cotton, so we developed our own.

Where is Bio Brite made?
Bio Brite is handmade in small batches in the USA. Every batch is made with care and attention to consistency—because the formula only works as intended when it's made correctly. Small-batch production means we maintain quality control at every step and stand behind every bottle we ship.

Usage & Instructions

What water temperature should I use with Bio Brite?
Hot water. Bio Brite is activated by hot water, which is required to get the full cleaning benefit from the formula. Cold or warm water will reduce its effectiveness.

How much Bio Brite should I use per load?
Follow the dosage instructions on the label. A common mistake is using too much detergent—excess detergent leaves residue in fibers that builds up over time. When in doubt, use slightly less than the recommended amount and run an extra rinse cycle.

Can I use Bio Brite in a high-efficiency (HE) washing machine?
Yes. Bio Brite is compatible with both standard and HE machines. Use the appropriate dosage for your machine type.

Should I use fabric softener with Bio Brite?
No. Fabric softeners coat fibers with a waxy residue that builds up over time and reduces breathability. They're not necessary when using Bio Brite—natural cotton softens on its own with proper washing.

Can I use dryer sheets?
We recommend against it for the same reason as fabric softener. Dryer sheets leave residue on fibers that accumulates with repeated use.

Fabric Compatibility

Is Bio Brite safe for all fabrics?
Bio Brite is formulated for natural fibers—particularly 100% cotton and linen. It works well on cotton blends and everyday clothing. We don't recommend it for wool, cashmere, or silk, which require specialized detergents.

Why is Bio Brite specifically designed for natural cotton?
Natural cotton is a cellulose-based fiber. Many mainstream detergents contain enzyme systems—including cellulase—that are designed to break down cellulose. Over repeated washes, this can degrade natural cotton fibers. Bio Brite eliminates those enzyme systems, preserving fiber integrity over time.

Will Bio Brite work on synthetic fabrics?
Yes, it will clean them. But synthetic fabrics are less sensitive to detergent choice—they're designed for durability and chemical resistance. The specific benefits of Bio Brite's formula are most relevant for natural fiber fabrics.

Scents

What scents does Bio Brite come in?
Bio Brite is available in three scents: Nag Champa, French Lavender, and Island Coconut. Each is chosen for its suitability in a sleep environment—present but not overwhelming.

How long does the scent last on fabric?
Scent longevity varies depending on fabric type, storage, and environment. On natural cotton bedding, the scent typically settles into the weave and releases gradually—most noticeable when you first get into bed and when the fabric is warm.

Are the fragrances synthetic or natural?
Our scents are carefully selected for their compatibility with natural cotton and their suitability for a bedroom environment. For specific fragrance composition questions, contact us directly.

Troubleshooting

My cotton sheets are getting rough. Can Bio Brite help?
Yes. Rough cotton sheets are usually caused by detergent residue buildup, enzyme damage, hard water deposits, or high heat drying. Switching to Bio Brite addresses the detergent-related causes. For existing buildup, try washing with hot water and a cup of white vinegar (no detergent) first, then follow with a normal Bio Brite wash.

My sheets are thinning or breaking down. What's happening?
This is most commonly caused by enzyme-based detergents degrading natural cotton fibers over time. It can also be accelerated by high heat drying and high-agitation wash cycles. Switching to Bio Brite and adjusting your wash routine can prevent further damage, though existing fiber loss cannot be reversed.

I switched to Bio Brite but my sheets still feel stiff. Why?
Stiffness after switching is usually residual buildup from previous detergents. Run a vinegar wash cycle (hot water, one cup white vinegar, no detergent) to strip the buildup, then wash normally with Bio Brite. Most customers notice a difference within two to three wash cycles.
